870 c 1600 f. Type 304 is the most widely used and versatile of the stainless steel grades. 304 stainless sheet offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. 304 stainless steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media.

It is used in heavy gauge components for improved weldability. It is available in a wider range of products forms and finishes than any other of the 300 grade stainless steels. It can withstand corrosion that can be caused by various chemicals found in fruits meat and milk. Type 304l is the low carbon version of 304.

Type 304 grade stainless steel is also found in sinks tabletops coffee pots refrigerators stoves utensils and other cooking appliances. Sensitization occurs when type 304 austenitic stainless steel is heated between 425 and 815 c. Its chemical composition mechanical properties weldability and ncorrosion oxidation resistance provide the best all round performance stainless steel at relatively low cost. This property has resulted in 304 being the dominant grade used in applications like sinks and saucepans.

Type 304 stainless steel is an austenitic grade that can be severely deep drawn. It is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 c. 304 stainless steel sheet is the most popular and economical of the stainless steels. Type 304 stainless steel is not magnetic but may be slightly magnetic after cold working.

It is considered resistant to pitting corrosion in water with up to about 400 mg l chlorides at ambient temperatures reducing to about 150 mg l at 60 c. Maximum service temperature in air.
